A hundred-year-old garage, run as an open room for people who build things.
The space was a mechanics shop from around 1927 until now, and we are keeping it that way. One open room. Concrete floor, garage height, a bay door you can drive through. Work benches and stools for hardware, prototyping and testing. Whiteboards and chalkboards along the opposite wall. A pool table at the back with a cap that drops to make it another work surface.
Anyone can join. There is no application and no pitch.
What happens here
Build nights. The floor gets set up for physical work — wrenching, robotics, assembly, test. Bring your own tools. The Hall brings the floor, the power, the benches and the hours. The bay door means you can get a robot, a rig or a pallet straight in, which most rooms in this city cannot offer.
Open nights. Doors open, no programme, pool table running. Come by and see if it suits you.
Learning days. Seminars in engineering, physics, manufacturing practice and business. Run by members and by people who do the work.
Demos. Members show what they built. Artifacts, not slides.
Certified training. We are in conversation with EPTAC about hosting certified IPC electronics training here. Nothing is signed yet.
Membership

What you get that nothing else in Hamilton offers: a room of people who can answer your question, and a floor you can actually work on.
We take no fee, no commission and no cut of anything you build here. We make introductions and host demonstrations. That is a rule, not an oversight.
How it pays for itself
Fifty-one members covers rent, heat, light, insurance and supplies. That is the whole operating model.
The Hall does not own a fleet of shared machines, which is what closes most spaces like this — laser cutters and CNC are expensive to buy, expensive to keep, and replace themselves faster than membership grows. Here the tools belong to the members and the fixed cost stays as rent. The making happens; the maintenance bill does not.
We intend to build one to three proper benches — ESD protection, extraction, inspection scope — for members on build nights and for certified trainers. That is on the roadmap, funded from surplus, and everything in it comes apart and travels.
The organisers are volunteers to start. If this works, that changes.
Two things you should know up front
The lease is one year. The building carries a redevelopment proposal, which is why the rent is what it is. We would rather you heard that from us.
The Hall is not this address. 4 Breadalbane is the site we want — the right size, the right character, parking, that bay door. Other Hamilton properties are being actively scouted, and the model works in any room of roughly this size and cost. If we move, you lose an address, not a membership.
Founding members
The first twenty-five members get a founding rate and a say in how the room runs.
We open within ninety days. If you want in before the doors, now is the moment.
