Certified electronics training in Hamilton — and how to get it funded

The short version

You need line staff certified to IPC standards. Sending them out of town costs travel, hotels and days off the floor. We are working to bring that training to a room ten minutes from most of the plants in this city.

And in most cases, you should not be paying for it out of pocket.


The funding, first — because it is the part most people miss

Programme What it covers
Ontario Job Grant Relaunched 1 May 2026. Open year-round. Up to $10,000 per trainee, and up to $15,000 for an unemployed new hire.
Skills Development Fund — Training Stream, Round 5 Opened June 2026 with $150M. Wage subsidies up to 50% (max $5,000/participant) plus training stipends up to $5,000/participant.

Ontario accepts applications from individual employers training 25 or fewer participants. This is not a consortium-only programme — a single plant certifying six people on the line qualifies.

What we intend to deliver

We are in conversation with EPTAC about hosting certified IPC training in Hamilton. Nothing is signed yet, and we will not tell you otherwise.

The plan:

  • First: IPC-A-610 — Certified IPC Specialist and Certified Standards Expert. Acceptability of electronic assemblies. Inspection and standards, image-driven, four-day format. This runs in the room as it stands.
  • Also first: IPC Designer Certification (CID) — PCB design against IPC-2221 and IPC-2222. Four days, classroom, no bench required, so it runs in the room as it stands alongside A-610. It never expires and needs no recertification. If your design work is done in-house, this is the one to ask about.
  • Then: hand soldering and rework (J-STD-001) — needs ESD control and fume extraction. We are building toward it on a costed roadmap.
  • Market reference pricing for context: IPC-A-610 CIS runs roughly $700–1,200 per student; combined A-610 and J-STD-001 packages $1,400–2,300; recertification at 60–70%.

Graduates are IPC-certified. We do not blur, substitute for, or rebrand that credential.


Why a garage

Because the alternative is a $100,000–300,000 institutional lab, or a mobile training unit costing half a million to a million and a quarter. A single properly built teaching bench — ESD bench, inspection microscope, professional irons, extraction, and a camera-and-display rig so the whole room sees the work — costs $10,000–25,000 and teaches the same standard.

The building was a mechanics shop for roughly a century. Concrete floor, garage height, real ventilation, and a bay door wide enough to bring equipment straight in. It is a better host for this work than a classroom.


What is in it for you beyond the certificate

  • Local delivery. No travel, no hotels, no three days of a technician's life spent in transit.
  • A room full of engineers. On build nights the floor fills with people doing hardware, robotics and controls work on their own projects. If you are hiring, they are here on a Tuesday.
  • Sponsorship. A firm can underwrite a monthly slot for hiring access and named seats in each cohort. It is cheap and it works.

Straight about the constraints

  • EPTAC: in conversation. Nothing signed. Everything above is intent, and we say so before you make plans around it.
  • Hands-on soldering is not available yet. Inspection and standards training is what the room can hold today.
  • The lease at our preferred site is one year, on a building with a redevelopment application. Our equipment comes apart and travels, other Hamilton properties are being actively scouted, and no cohort gets booked past a term we can guarantee.

If you have line staff who need certifying in the next twelve months, tell us how many and to what standard. That number turns this from a plan into a scheduled cohort, and it is the most useful thing you can give us.
